Know Everything about Coaxial Speaker Cable

These days’ coaxial speaker cables used commonly and find them in every home. These are used for transmission of audio and video signals, modems, for TV antennas, cable boxes etc. In this blog we will give you depth knowledge coaxial cables and discuss about types of coaxial cable and also discuss the using of coaxial cables as speaker wire and know about the pros and cons of coaxial cables.

Coaxial Speaker Cable

What is Coaxial Cable?

Coaxial cable short name is coax and it’s used to transfer audio and video data. This cable is covered by conducting shield and has an inner conductor. The ‘co’ and the ‘axis’ come together to make the name of ‘coaxial’ as amalgamation of the inner conductor and the geometric axis and firstly used in 1858 since the beginning of the 20th century

The coaxial cable used to transfer high-frequency electrical signals and used to connect various communication devices. Basically it’s used for high-speed computer data buses, for cable television connections, in telephone communications, for internet networking cables and receivers of all kinds.

Types of Coaxial Cables:

1. RG-6/U: It has 1.024mm core diameter and 6.86mm outer diameter with 75Ω impedance. It’s used in cable TV, satellite TV, cable modems.

2. RG-6/UQ: It has 1.024mm core diameter and 7.57mm outer diameter with 75Ω impedance. It’s used in cable TV, satellite TV, cable modems with better shielding.

3. RG-7: It has 1.3mm core diameter and 8.13mm outer diameter with 75Ω impedance. It’s used in cable TV, satellite TV, cable modems.

4. RG-8/U: It has 2.17mm core diameter and 10.3mm outer diameter with 50Ω impedance. It’s used in amateur radio.

5. RG-8/X: It has 1.47mm core diameter and 6.1mm outer diameter with 50Ω impedance. It’s used in amateur radio.

6. RG-11/U: It has 1.63mm core diameter and 10.5mm outer diameter with 75Ω impedance. It’s used in cable TV, satellite TV, cable modems but with lower losses.

7. RG-58/U: It has 0.81mm core diameter and 5mm outer diameter with 50Ω impedance. It’s used in Amateur radio, radio communications, Ethernet.

8. RG-59/U: It has 0.64mm core diameter and 6.1mm outer diameter with 75Ω impedance. It’s used in HQ HD video signal transmission over short distances.

9. RG-60/U: It has 1.024mm core diameter and 10.8mm outer diameter with 50Ω impedance. It’s used in HD cable TV.

Which type of Connectors is used for Coax Cables?

In coax cables used different types of cable and different applications require different connectors. It’s used with a number of different connectors, but the most common types are N-type connectors, BNC, F-type connectors, SMA connectors and RCA connectors.

N-type connectors: Its use with lower microwave frequencies up to 18 GHz for various RF applications.

BNC connectors: It’s used for RF and video applications and it’s designed for frequencies up to 10 GHz.

F-type connectors: The most common connector F-type for coaxial cables so it’s used for TV cables and antenna cables and handle frequencies up to 1 GHz.

SMA connectors: These are used for RF applications and designed to work with frequencies ranging from 0 Hz to 12 GHz and it’s used in hand-held radio antennas, microwave systems, mobile telephone antennas, Wi-Fi antenna systems etc.

RCA connectors: It’s commonly used for coaxial cables, audio and video transmission and handles frequencies up to 10MHz.

The Pros and Cons of Coaxial Cables:

Pros:

·         It price very cheap so affordable to everyone.

·         Easy to install and use

·         It is durable

·         It has enables to high-frequency applications

·         High-bandwidth transmission

·         Used to EMI and RFI

·         Support high transfer rates

Cons:

·   Its biggest drawback is when one cable failure then entire network down

·      It has to be grounded

·      Its installation much harder because it is thick and stiff.
